UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital has a rich history of providing excellent medical care to children living in the Bay Area.

A Leading Presence in the Bay Area

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital is recognized as one of the leading pediatric hospitals in the United States. In 2014, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco partnered with Children’s Hospital Oakland and instantly became one of the top five largest enterprise pediatric care and research centers in the United States.

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital was originally founded in 1864 and is a part of the University of California, San Francisco. This institution helped shape the course of modern pediatric medicine by providing compassionate and collaborative care with an additional emphasis on pioneering research.

Children’s Hospital Oakland was originally founded in 1912 and first opened its doors in 1914. Today, it is the busiest pediatric hospital in the Bay Area and provides the largest number of ambulatory and preventive services of any pediatric hospital in the region.

The affiliation between these two pillars of care represents one of the United States’ most comprehensive pediatric medicine systems combining compassionate care with innovative technology and therapies and instilling hope in the children they treat and their families. Together, these highly respected institutions are UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, and they share a mission of promoting the health of children here in the Bay Area and throughout the world.

Specialty Services

Recognized as one of the most innovative and effective children’s hospitals in the entire world, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals provide the full spectrum of pediatric care and are leaders in several areas of specialty care, including cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders, organ transplants, and orthopedics. They also specialize in caring for critically ill newborns. The San Francisco campus alone employees 150 pediatric experts practicing in 50 different areas of specialty care. And in 2015, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco opened their new 183-bed facility at Mission Bay, which offers emergency care and specialty outpatient services.

The facilities at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals include programs designed specifically with children in mind, including a neonatal intensive care nursery, recreational therapy for recovering kids, and numerous outreach clinics located throughout Northern California. The doctors at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital were the first in the world to perform successful surgery on a baby still in the womb, and they have also developed life-saving treatments for premature babies who are born before their lungs have fully developed.

For children who are admitted, the Child Life team helps children and their families adjust to hospitalization and helps make their stay as fun and positive as possible. There are also social workers on staff specifically trained to help children who have been diagnosed with illness and disease (and their families) cope with their condition.

Additionally, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital is one of the leading pediatric hospitals in the nation when it comes to neurology and neurosurgery; it houses the largest brain tumor treatment program in the country as well as the sole comprehensive epilepsy center in Northern California. The Mission Bay facility is also home to one of the nation’s largest centers for kidney and liver transplants, and their HIV/AIDS program is the most comprehensive in the nation.

The Oakland campus not only treats more children than any other pediatric hospital in the Bay Area, but they also have a robust research program, with more than 300 scientists currently working on over 150 clinical trials. And since the research facility is located at the hospital, their findings can be transferred directly from the lab to the hospital and vice versa. Finally, the Oakland campus houses the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center and comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation center exclusively for children in the Bay Area.

Awards and Recognition

The campuses and facilities that comprise UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals have received many awards and distinctions in recent years and throughout their history. The following are a few noteworthy examples:
